NYIIRUN MIRRIIYN BATHU (We are stars and water)
Writing Backwards, Sydney College of the Arts, 2023
Ghost as memory—ancestral, embodied, and dispersed across time. The piece unfolds as a dialogue between the written and the sonic, between past and present, language and echo. Through a series of poetic letters addressed to ancestral self and blood memory, written verse speaks from the present moment, while the accompanying soundscape embodies the other voice: a ghostly presence released only once when the page is opened, then lost again. This interplay invites reflection on how reading and listening are acts of embodiment that summon memory, kinship, and cultural inheritance. The work serves as a bridge between realms—a communion between two protagonists, word and sound—offering space to honour what is remembered, what is reactivated through experience, and what lingers after the sound has faded.
